Live chat?

Is anyone interested in a live chat area of the site? It's an idea I've been toying with for awhile, and now that we have our own server we can install anything we want on it. It would be cool to be able to chat with some of the users of the site when time permits it, but are the users interested in this?

Would you want to chat on the site? Not only with me (I say "me" because Dave has a lot more going on in his life and may not have time to chat online - I'm sure he'll chime in though), but with other members as well? I'd like to see the site grow more into a community where we can discuss various things, and this seems like it could be a fun step.

Absolutely! It seems like a great idea. I hope that you do it! Thanks.

I think a chat room would stray too far in subject. Discussion on this site is probably best left to a message board, as that is more structured.

Count me as interested in a chatroom.

Anon poster, we already have HTF for message board discussion.

Gord, you're right on the mark with that comment; I don't know when I'd have time to even show up there. If I got really bored at some point with nothing else to do, then of course I would check it out and chime in. But with so many TV-DVDs to watch, I don't know how I'd ever get to be bored! :) And my wife thinks I already spend too much time with TSoD...chatting isn't going to get me to spending time with her and/or my son any faster.

re: "I think a chat room would stray too far in subject."

That was my other first thought as well. I also wonder if we would be in trouble (read: "liable") if someone used our chatroom to set up something illegal while both Gord and I were unable to monitor the chatroom because we were otherwise occupied.

I would feel especially bad if, for instance, some youth was tricked into meeting with a pedophile because he or she was coming to the chatroom hoping to talk to someone about Kim Possible DVDs. :(

I already spend too much of my life on the site reading the news. A chat would wipe me out socially :) I'm more of a message board type of person, but hey, if you guys want to do the chat thing, I'm sure I'd be lured into it eventually.

I would join in occasionally. It might be fun.

I think Aaron Sanko hit the nail right on the head.

Maybe this is a stretch, but I wouldn't mind participating in live chats with people in the TV/DVD industry or something like that. Sort of like celebrities used to do. I don't know how difficult that would be to arrange, or how much extra time it would take out of your schedules to pull it off, or even if it's already been done before, but I'm thinking it would be great for those who want to personally give their feedback/ask questions about TV-DVD releases and give input on what we'd like to see. If that came along, I'd be in whole-heartedly.

I pretty much agree with aaron and some of the others. I think a message board is best. But a live chat could be cool. I think the best way to do it would maybe be like once a week for an hour or so. Maybe even less, maybe once a month.

I'm all for a chat at specific times, preset...kind of like other spoiler chats I frequent on eonline and such. A message board would be cool, but don't we already have that on HTF?

On a sort of related note, I'm digging these blogs. Don't know why it's taken me this long to discover them!

Yeah, a chat would be cool, but I pretty much never remember to do those. I'd actually love to see an official forum actually based on the TV Shows on DVD website, as the Home Theater Forum kinda scares me due to its hugeness, and also its ads. Any chance of having a forum right on the site? I'd join that in a heartbeat.

We've thought about having a forum on the site, but it would take a lot of time to administer the board. I don't think Dave or I have the time that would be required.

Recruit moderators then :) I have tons of experience :)

Plus I'm in Memphis, and if I screwed it up, Dave could drive over and smack me about the ears.

I like the sound of a forum too. I know some of these forums can become tiresome but with good moderation these problems can be overcome. Would be a good way to include information on non-releases! (I've just read the blog comment on this and take the point entirely, but still would be good to have somewhere to find out problems associated with some shows.

I think a chatroom would be a great idea.....Like any site even if the topics do go astray from the purpose...there is no harm in it....If its posted off the tvshowsondvd website......then it will most likely stay on focus 95% of the time..Why not try a month trial of it? I can offer the chat room off my website....if that would help...moderation status can be given to Gord & Dave as well as anyone they see fit....a room discussion topic & chat warning can be made visible to a person when they first enter the room and anytime they enter the room. If this sounds like something you would like to try please feel free to email me mthomas860@yahoo.com

yes, and of course to rid yourselves of those juvenile minds who like to enter chat rooms and just start fights and insult people, be sure to have the "kick" buttom ready at all times...and have a language filter...i'd love to chat about missing in action tv shows...say son of the beach volume 2 , mad about you season 3, king of queens season 5, etc
